MEC Willies Mchunu commended the work by law enforcemment who arrested more than 22 people for speeding on KZN roads as part of the Transport month safety awareness and enforcement campaign.

MOTORISTS are encouraged to ensure their vehicles are in a good and roadworthy condition this October as the country acknowledges Transport Month.

The KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has welcomed the arrest of more than 22 motorists for drinking and driving as part of the Transport Month extensive enforcement campaign.

Mchunu commended the Department of Transport’s Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and other law enforcement agencies who have maintained high visibility during this period. “Since the start of October 2015, more than 47 172 vehicles have been stopped and searched and more than 6 440 charges have been issued for various traffic violations. More than 140 vehicles have been suspended and 479 have been arrested for driving without valid driver’s licences,” Mchunu said.

MEC Mchunu commended the work done by the integrated law enforcement teams, saying tough measures will be applied ahead of the festive season period.

“Our law enforcement officers are proactively preventing road accidents, crashes and fatalities by ridding our roads of un-roadworthy vehicles and traffic violators. The fact that more than 22 people have been arrested for excessive speeding is an indication that people still disobey traffic regulations. We have increased traffic police visibility and we will maintain this intensive law enforcement through to the festive season and beyond,” said Mchunu.
