Bikers, motorists urged to slow down after spate of crashes

After many concerning motorcycle accidents and one fatality in Durban last week another biker has been seriously injured in a Morningside crash.

LOCAL paramedics are concerned with Durban’s high motorcycle accident rate after another biker was involved in a serious accident in Durban on Monday morning.

According to Garrith Jamieson, operations director of Rescue Care the biker came off his delivery bike in the crash and was seriously injured.

The accident comes after paramedics were kept extremely busy last Thursday attending to six separate bike accidents in and around Durban area in an eight hour time frame.

“Just after 7am on Thursday this morning a bike and three cars collided outside Bluff Road. The biker sustained serious injuries whilst one of the drivers was slightly injured. Both patients were stabilised on the scene before being transported to hospital. Just after 8am paramedics were called to Warwick Avenue and Canongate for a collision between a biker and a taxi. The biker sustained minor injuries and we stabilised him on the scene before transporting him to a nearby hospital.

“Around 10am Rescue Care Paramedics were called to Clare Road near the BP Garage. On arrival they found a biker had sustained serious injuries. Advanced Life Support Paramedics stabilised the man on the scene before he was rushed to hospital. The driver of the car was also injured and transported to hospital. At 11.15am paramedics attended to a collision on Stella Road near the Spar where a bakkie and a bike collided. The bike driver sustained minor injuries,” he explained.

Jamieson said paramedics continued to attend bike crash scenes that afternoon with one around 1pm on Windermere and Larch Road. “It was a biker and two car collision. The biker had also sustained serious injuries and our Advanced Life Support unit stabilised the man on scene before transporting him to hospital. The car drivers were not injured. Soon after paramedics were called to another bike accident on Stella Road near 6th Avenue in Hillary around 1.30pm. Paramedics found that the biker had sustained moderate injuries and was stabilised on the scene.”

“Rescue Care Paramedics would like to urge both motorcyclists and vehicle drivers to please slow down and respect each other on the road. Paramedics find that both bike drivers as well as car drivers are always rushing and this is when accidents occur,” Jamieson explained.
