Humanitarian leads cancer awareness walk

Dr Thandeka Mazibuko, a South African of the Year 2015 nominee together with community members wearing bright pink t-shirts created Breast Cancer Awareness with a walk from King Dinuzulu Park to City Hall on Friday.

DR Thandeka Mazibuko not only talks the talk, about uniting Africa against cancer, this morning she also walked the walk.

The South African of the Year 2015 nominee together with community members wearing bright pink t-shirts supporting Breast Cancer Awareness month met at King Dinuzulu Park before walking down Dr Pixley Ka Seme Road, handing out awareness pamphlets.

The group joined the Dr Thankdeka Mazibuko Foundation uniting Africa against cancer by walking down the street to City Hall where she has set up the “Pink Couch,” a cancer indaba will be held and speakers would engage in discussions about the disease and how to be more aware and detect the various types of cancer.

Mazibuko will have a special focus on breast cancer and breast examinations will be conducted outside City Hall.

A medical doctor specialising in oncology and radiation, Mazibuko was shocked to hear many of her black patients in rural KZN didn’t believe cancer affected the black people. “One of my patients laughed when I diagnosed her with breast cancer, she said she thought cancer only affected white people.

“Early cancer detection saves lives. The mothers who are vendors at the market begged us to teach them just how to do a breast examination and it is evident that are hungry for cancer knowledge,” she said excited to make more women aware of the disease.
