Sunflower Fund’s walk for charity

The Sunflower Fund was happy that Durban's wet weather did not put a damper on the annual charity 5km Fun Walk on Sunday.

THE damp and overcast weather did not impact on the success of the ninth annual Pick n Pay Hyper 5km Fun Run/Walk for Charity in support of The Sunflower Fund on Sunday. The event started promptly at 9.30am from SUNCOAST Amphitheatre and went out onto the promenade and back with no complaints about the slight drizzle along the way.

A total of 770 participants donned the latest Sunflower Bandana in support of The Sunflower Fund and loved ones who had lost their battle to leukaemia. The atmosphere was festive with the DPHS Gum Boot Dancers, the Dance Direction dancers and and school singers and dancers entertaining the crowd.

Five substantial prizes ranging from household products to meal vouchers from Havana Grill were handed over to the delighted lucky draw winners. The raffle prize of a trolley full of groceries valued at R1500, which raised an extra R2 100, went to Precilla Panday.

The South African National Blood Services (SANBS) also managed to collect 18 pints of much needed blood during the event.

The Sunflower Fund's Stephanie Berry said a total of R38 510 was raised, which will allow The Fund to include new bone marrow stem cell donors on the South African Bone Marrow Registry. “The more donors on the Registry the more hope patients diagnosed with leukaemia have of finding their 1:100 000 donor match.

“The Sunflower Fund would like to thank Pick 'n Pay Hyper, SUNCOAST, Round Table Southern Africa, the media, the City and Durban Metro Police for making the event possible,” she added.

Berry encouraged locals to don their Sunflower bandanas on National Bandana Day, Monday, 12 October 2015 and show solidarity for leukaemia patients who have lost their hair from chemotherapy while awaiting a bone marrow stem cell transplant. Sunflower Bandanas can be purchased from Pick n Pay, Round Table, selected Makro stores and the online shop, Zando for only R25 each. It’s all about saving lives,” Berry added.
