Horror M7 bridge crash claims two lives

Two drivers who had to have the jaws of life remove them form their vehicles in the horror crash at the M7 Bridge this morning died after paramedics tried to save them.

TWO people were killed in a horrific accident on the M7 East bound under the N2 interchange a short while ago.

According to Garrith Jamieson of Rescue Care, paramedics were called to the accident scene just after 11:15am and found absolute carnage when they arrived. “A truck had collided with two cars and another truck before losing control and colliding with the bridge. Both the truck driver and one of the vehicle drivers were entrapped in the wreckage,” explained Jamieson.

Immediately Durban Fire Department as well as Durban SAPS Search and Rescue unit were called to assist and together with paramedics quickly extricated the car driver who unfortunately went into sudden cardiac arrest.

“Our advanced Life Support paramedic began resuscitating the 83-year-old, however he had suffered severe injuries and after thirty minutes of resuscitation, was declared deceased at the scene. The one truck driver was severely entrapped in the wreckage, suffered severe injuries and was also declared deceased on the scene whilst the other truck driver sustained minor injuries and was stabilised on the scene before being taken to a hospital,” Jamieson said.

Robert Mckenzie, spokesman for Emergency Medical Services said the exact cause of the crash, which involved a car and a truck transporting maize meal, is not known at this stage. “When paramedics arrived one team immediately started CPR on a man who had been an occupant of the car. Another team started trying to access the cabin of the truck which had hit wall of the bridge and become stuck.

“The crash resulted in the M7 being closed to traffic, in both directions, while EMS worked at the scene.
