Heavies concern elderly folk

Residents in Burman Drive are fed up with the number of trucks parking on the pavement in the road.

TRUCKS parking alongside the old age home in Burman Drive, Morningside, have raised the concern and ire of local residents.

According to a concerned resident, numerous emails have been written over the past year to the municipality and ward councillor calling for action on the matter.

“Eighteen-wheeler trucks, sometimes four or five at a time, park alongside the road on the pavement and block the whole road. When we speak to them, they totally ignore us and refuse to move. The drains have been broken by the trucks, which makes it dangerous for residents walking along the pavement. When trucks are parked on the pavement, there is nowhere for the elderly residents to walk,” he said.

The resident said he had seen Metro Police vehicles driving past the trucks on many occasions, but nothing had been done to address the issue.

Another resident said cars sped down the road, and taxis parked parallel to the trucks, which made it dangerous for any resident crossing the road.

“We have partially sighted residents, some with walking sticks, trying to cross the road. We live across from Burman Bush, and have seen small animals killed by speeding cars. We can't hear ourselves think in our own flat, with the trucks bleeping when they reverse, it drives us mad,” she said.

The residents said they had spoken to the ward councillor, Martin Meyer, who said he had been informed by the municipality that speed bumps could not be installed in the road as it was not a 'hot spot' for accidents and didn't warrant any speed control.

“We have asked the municipality to put bollards on the pavement to stop the trucks parking there, and feel some sort of speed enforcement is needed. There is no control over how fast vehicles drive down this road. Surely there is some restriction on tonnage in the road. This is such a busy road, something needs to be done.”
