KZN Chess Girls Festival in Morningside

The KZN Chess Academy promoted chess amongst school girls with a festival to celebrate Women's month.

IN celebration of Women's month, the KZN Chess Academy and Gordon Road Girls School held the KZN Chess Girls Festival at the school on Saturday.

According to KZN Chess Academy coach, Erick Takawira, the aim of the festival was to promote girls chess and have lots of fun. “We wanted to celebrate Women's month through chess and get the girls excited about chess. We have had a fun day with lots of prizes for participating thanks to our sponsors, Tekwini Board and Hardware and the KZN Chess Academy,” he said.

Yvonne Johnstone, principal at Gordon Girls was delighted to host the event. “Our school has a long history of promoting chess and we are quite proud that we have produced four SA Chess Champions,” she added.

The school's chess co-ordinator, Shamilla Ramlall said, “The girls were excited about the festival especially after a recent fun day where we had a huge chess board set up in our hall and the children were the chess pieces or players.
