Placard Picket against corruption

Civil society organisation, Arise and Act! urges people to join their peaceful picket to take a stand against corruption.

STAND up against corruption and make your voices heard as a city, on Sunday 16 August.

Arise and Act!, a human rights, civil society organisation, will hold a peaceful placard picket at North Beach (near the Beach Pavilion) from 10.30am to 1pm, in the area between Joe Cools and Skateboard Park.

According to Eric Tate from Arise and Act! the purpose of the picket will be to hold a silent vigil for the victims of the Marikana killings, on this the 3rd anniversary of the tragedy and protest against the high and what Tate says are unacceptable levels of corruption in the country.

“After 21 years of our first democratic elections, we are faced with problems of non-delivery of services. The political and economic power elites have become increasingly arrogant, disregarding the entrenched constitutional rights and legitimate aspirations of the citizens, which was struggled for by generations of the majority of the oppressed in this country,” he said.

Arise and Act! is taking a stand against corruption, poor conditions of public health providers, the lowest education rate in the world and high unemployment rate, a lack of service delivery, interference with the Public Protector, the issue of Nkandla and a culture of non-accountability and utter contempt for the nation, the deaths at Marikana, depreciation of the Rand and economy and Eskom’s rolling load shedding.

“We need to stand up against corruption and say ‘we’ve had enough!’ We need to save our country,” said Tate.

He said the organisation expects around 500 people, comprising a number of church congregations as well as human rights organisations and NGOs, to be at the picket.
