House robber arrested

A man posing as someone looking for work in the Umbilo area, held up a family and stole items and their car.

A MAN was arrested at the weekend for possession of stolen property as well as a motor vehicle that was used to transport the stolen goods.

A television set, a laptop, jewellery, cellphone and a Mercedes Benz motor vehicle that was stolen during the house robbery in the Umbilo area were recovered.

According to Col Jay Naicker from SAPS, it is alleged the victims were at their home when two suspects broke in.

“The suspects produced a firearm before removing the mentioned items and fleeing the scene,” he said.

Umbilo police were called out and conducted the necessary investigation on the scene as well as provided counselling to the visibly scared family members.

“One of the victims advised police of a specific suspect who had come to their home the day before looking for a job. She further advised that she became suspicious as the would-be employee was driving a car at the time of visit,” said Naicker.

He said following an investigation by the Inanda Crime Intelligence, Ntuzuma Crime Prevention and Durban Flying Squad, the motor vehicle was traced to the Ntuzuma bus depot.

“A suspect who was found in the vehicle was in possession of an unlicensed firearm and was arrested and detained. A .38 special revolver without a serial number was seized and will be sent for ballistic tests in order to ascertain if it was involved in any other crimes. The man was charged for car hijacking, house robbery and possession of a unlicensed firearm,” said Naicker.
