One arrested after student robbery

Police arrest student robbery suspect after he returned to campus.

BEREA police arrested a young man near the DUT Ritson Road campus on Monday morning, a day after he was allegedly involved in a robbery close to the scene of the crime.

According to Captain TT Gumede, two students were walking along Botanic Gardens Road on Sunday night near a bus shelter when they were confronted by a group of eight men who were armed with knives. “The group made off with the student’s bag which had his laptop, R1800 and personal documents from his parents that he was going to use to register at campus.”

The students were hopeful that the group might have discarded their documents which were needed for registration and went looking for it in the vicinity of the crime scene. “It was not far from the scene that the students spotted two suspicious men and noticed one was one of the group that robbed him. Berea members were called out and together with campus security arrested the men,” Gumede said.
