Copper thieves arrested

Two copper thieves were arrested by Durban Flying Squad last week.

MEMBERS of Durban Flying Squad arrested copper thieves on 28 July.

The officers were on routine patrols when they received information about two suspects at the riverbank of the Umgeni River. They immediately attended to the scene where they found two men stripping suspected stolen copper cables.

“They had made a fire which they used to burn these cables. Also found in their possession was a hacksaw, pliers and knives used to cut stolen cables. The street value of these cables is estimated to be worth R20 000 and the men are expected to appear in court on charges of possession of stolen property,” said Major Thulani Zwane from SAPS.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the members for the arrest.

“We would like give a stern warning to all copper cable thieves that we shall arrest them as it is a very costly exercise to restore stolen cables,” she said.
