Umbilo SAPS warns the community to be aware of crime trends in the area.

Stolen goods recovered

UMBILO SAPS officers recovered thousands of rands' worth of computer equipment following a stop and search in Fennisclose Road, Umbilo on Saturday.

According to communications officer, Lt Pumzile Makaula, police were patrolling in the road when they saw two men standing outside a block of flats.

“The officers felt they looked suspicious, and decided to do a stop and search. When the men saw the car slow down, they ran into the building to a flat. When the police found them, they recovered computer equipment, monitors and photocopy machines, which they had no cash slips or paperwork for,” she said.

The men were arrested and charged for possession of property suspected to be stolen.

Women warned not to accept lifts

Lt Makaula sent out a warning to women not to accept lifts from strangers.

This warning comes after a woman who was walking in Umbilo on Sunday at 5pm, was forced by gunpoint to get into a man's car. He then took her to a nearby park where he raped her.

“I urge women not to walk alone in the evening or at night, and to never accept lifts from strangers,” she said.

Crime trend

Lt Makaula said the police had also noticed a crime trend in the area where thieves are entering premises with staff and holding them up in the early morning.

“Last week two men walked into a business at Queensmead Mall in the morning and held staff up at gunpoint, stealing money from them. On Friday, officers attended a business robbery in Magwaza Maphalala Street where a similar modus operandi was used. Three men walked up the business stairs with a staff member, and when she called for the door to be opened, the men forced their way in at gunpoint and demanded money from the owner,” she said.

The men got away on foot with a large sum of money.
