Suspect shot after footbridge mugging

Umbilo police are sending a strong warning to criminals after two robbery suspects were arrested and one shot after a mugging on the Rossburgh footbridge.

UMBILO police are appealing to the community to be extra vigilant when walking along the Rossburgh footbridge and are sending a strong warning to criminals that they are being watched. This comes after a suspect was shot by police after allegedly robbing a woman last weekend.

According to Lieutenant Phumzile Makaula, communications officer at Umbilo SAPS, a young couple were walking across the footbridge towards the M7 last Saturday morning when they were attacked by two suspects. “One man had a knife and grabbed the young woman’s bag before running off. Officers patrolling in the area heard the screams and after seeing the victim, gave chase.

“Both suspects were arrested, one is injured in hospital after he was shot in the stomach while trying to stab the police officer,” Makaula explained.

The suspects took cellphones and a bag, one phone was returned with some of the money. The suspect is in King Edward hospital under police guard. The other appeared in court. The suspects were charged with robbery with a knife.

Makaula warned the public to avoid using the bridge alone, especially during quiet times.
