Goodwool scarves for Mandela

The 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela project distributed scarves by tying them to trees along the promenade near Addington Beach for the homeless and cold on Durban's beachfront on Thursday.

THE 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day movement distributed scarves around the country last Thursday afternoon, at various locations simultaneously.

In the run up to Nelson Mandela Day, on Saturday, 18 July, this is another project of this movement to keep South Africa warm.

The Knitwits of 67 Blankets of Nelson Mandela Day were called upon a few weeks ago by founder, Carolyn Steyn to knit scarves for distribution. The call was answered and at about 3pm on Thursday the scarves were distributed in various towns by tying them onto trees, lampposts and fences in the identified areas. Durban Knitwits, Franki Hills and Shelley Olivier tied dozens of scarves around the trees along Addington beach promenade for the cold and homeless.

Pedestrians and commuters were welcomed and encouraged to take a scarf for themselves as they were made with ‘love and goodwool’ and are meant to keep someone warm.
