Murder suspect captured after a decade

After a decade on the run eluding police a wanted criminal was arrested by a joint effort between Sydenham police, the Durban Flying Squad and Inanda Crime Intelligence last week.

AFTER ten years on the run, the Durban Flying Squad, Inanda Crime Intelligence and Sydenham police arrested a wanted murder suspect.

The police units stormed into a shack at the Kennedy Road informal settlement, in the early hours of Thursday morning armed with three warrants of arrest, searching for 39-year-old Lungelo Lennox Jama.

According to provincial police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, Jama has been in the wanted suspects list from 2005. “He was wanted for murder, rape and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm that he allegedly committed in Duncan Village in the Eastern Cape.

“Jama fled his place of residence in 2005 to hide out in the cluttered shacks in Kennedy Road where he has been hiding, he would move from his shack to stay at his girlfriends’ because he was aware that ‘police were on his tail’,” explained Zwane.

Zwane said Jama was caught by surprise in the early hours of the morning when police pounced and apprehended him. “He was detained at Sydenham Police Station and will be transported to Duncan Village to face the consequences of his actions,” Zwane said.

KZN provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised police for apprehending the suspect. “As the saying goes, crime does not pay. Let this be the lesson to others that, no matter how long the crime was committed, we will make sure that the perpetrator is captured and kept behind bars,” she said.
