Shoddy service delivery angers residents

Musgrave residents are shocked and angered by blatant negligence in service delivery after a tree was trimmed and left on the pavement for weeks leaving pedestrians to walk on the road.

FED up Musgrave residents are shocked by the blatant negligence in service delivery from the municipality after a tree which they believe was rotten, crashed into a wall of a house on Stephen Dlamini (Essenwood) Road.

According to Meyerick Rubin, the high wind a few weeks ago brought down the tree which crashed into a resident's boundary wall. “They cut parts of the tree but have not removed these huge logs and branches, which have been left on the pavement for weeks forcing pedestrians to walk on the road to get around them.”

Shevanna Williams, owner of the property onto which the tree crashed said the tree not only smashed a wall, but also the electric fence, some tiles and all their plants. “Our yard is a mess, but thank God nobody was home so nobody got hurt. We have complained about the tree rotting for a while because we were concerned that it could fall. I do hope they cut it down completely because it is dangerous, not only if it falls in our yard but to the pedestrians on the road that walk past,” she said.

Rubin said he believed the city manager should be available to everyone in the city especially when such incidents happen. “We don't want to waste his time but want to have contact so that we can let him know about issues and problems around the city so he knows work is being done and when things are not in order, so he can follow up with the relevant departments. It seems nobody inspects work holistically anymore, so while we had about a dozen workers cutting this tree after it fell, nobody was here to ensure the large branches were removed and the pavement was safe for walking. Pedestrians, many of them children and elderly, have to walk on the road and are at risk of getting knocked on this busy road which has motorists racing through. This is a sad and a very dangerous situation. We have contacted the municipality to report the matter and warned them that someone could get hurt,” he added.
