Durban Pride adds colourful touch to beach parade

More than 1000 people braved the cold on Saturday to celebrate Durban Pride.

A CROWD of 1 500 lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people along with straight allies, supporters, family and friends, braved grey weather with fabulous colour at the 5th Durban Pride parade, held on Durban's beachfront on Saturday, 27 June.

The day started with a flag raising ceremony at the Amphitheatre on North Beach, at which speakers addressed the past, present and future of LGBTI equality in South Africa and on the continent.

This was followed by the colourful march on OR Tambo Parade and along the beachfront and an afternoon of celebration with DJs, singers, bands and drag performers entertaining the crowds.

DA deputy caucus leader and ward councillor, Martin Meyer, said: “It was an honour for the DA to once more be part of this. The DA is a party that believes in and defends the Bill of Rights that protects the rights of all South

Africans. It is thus with concern that we note that none of the other political parties came, even though they where all invited. I want to congratulate the the Durban Lesbian and Gay Centre for a well organised Pride event.”
