Mayor welcomes rejection of Eskom tariff hike

Nersa's rejection of a request by Eskom for tariff increases has been welcomed by eThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo.

EThekwini Mayor  James Nxumalo has welcomed the National Energy Regulator’s (Nersa) rejection of an application made by Eskom to increase electricity prices to 25.3% for 2015/16 financial year.

Nxumalo said the country was under immense strain as a result of the energy crisis and the city was working hard to minimise the impact of load shedding to eThekwini customers.

“We recently convened a round-table discussion with all affected businesses and stakeholders to ensure business continuity and reduce the impact of load shedding on productivity and employment creation. The city has always been opposed to Eskom’s submission for further increases of the electricity tariff and fully support the decision made by Nersa to reject the price increase request,” said Nxumalo.
