Woman receives artificial hand

Christine Manci was overjoyed to receive the gift of an artificial hand from the Rotary eClub recently.

A RATHER overwhelmed Mrs Christine Manci, and her husband Goodman, travelled to Durban last week to receive an artificial hand which had been specially made for Christine.

This generous gift was made possible by an anonymous charity in America, and the process was facilitated by Rotarian Irene Kotze of the Rotary eClub.

A chance conversation in a public transport vehicle, overheard by Rotarian Temba Nosenga set events in motion.

“Of the 70 handicapped patients interviewed, Christine, whose hand was amputated below the elbow after a fulminating infection, was the first suitable candidate for the hand,” said Irene.

The prosthesis was presented and fitted at a joint meeting of the Durban Thekwini and the Durban Bay Rotary Clubs at the Botanic Gardens Education Centre on Wednesday 10 June.

There is also another hand waiting for a suitable candidate.
