Happy Father’s Day

Iain "Ewok" Robinson chats to Berea Mail about life, fatherhood and his new show YOBO, which is heading to the National Arts Festival.

LOCAL hip hop, graffiti and performance artist Iain “Ewok” Robinson has a lot of exciting chapters in his life but having a little person call him “dad”, is one of the most exciting.

Fatherhood has changed him, and three-year-old Ethan has centred him, he told Berea Mail this week. “There's is no preparation for Fatherhood, when it actually happens, nothing prepares you the immediate amount of love you have for your kid. The connection is immediate and your relationship with your partner goes to another level of connection,” he said.

Being a public performer, Ewok, says he has ensured Ethan is aware of his work and the toddler has even seen his dad in Annie and Aladdin. “He's backstage for most of my productions but we ensure he sees the costumes and makeup put on so he understands is acting. He has a wonderful imagination and loves fantasy, some days he wakes up as a pirate others a Ninja Turtle or type of dinosaur we love it and his grandparents encourage it too,” he added.

Ewok and his wife, Karen Logan are busy rehearsing for His new show YOBO, a spoken word audio-visual experience. Ewok’s razor-sharp tongue has graced many an international stage to much critical acclaim. In YOBO, the Glenwood husband and wife team combine forces again to create a highly metaphorical theatre experience using live video projection and an original score created across continents.

“You have to be able to adapt if you are going to raise your kid right, because that little life is in constant development. You become more aware of your tolerance levels and are more tolerant with your kid but less tolerant with the world. The kid you knew yesterday is the one that you learned about today, and will become a new kid tomorrow.
