Crime round-up from Berea SAPS

Berea police members were hard at work over the past week in bringing crime in the area to a minimum.

Suspected ladder thieves apprehended

Berea police were patrolling along John Zikhali, Sydenham Road, Musgrave on Friday morning when they saw two suspicious men carrying an aluminium step ladder and a orange plastic bag.

“When they stopped and searched the suspects, they found tools. After questioning the suspects, the men were unable to give the police a reasonable explanation for carrying the items or tell them where they had got them from,” said Lieutenant PN Naidoo, communications officer at Berea SAPS.

The were charged for being in possession of suspected stolen property.

Roadblock nets drunk drivers

Eight people were arrested when Berea police held a roadblock at Florida Road last Thursday night.

“They were mostly motorists arrested for driving whilst under the influence of alcohol,” explained Lt Naidoo, he added, “A warning goes out to the public that they should rather use the taxi service when indulging in alcohol because if you drive drunk you will be charged!”

Drug users warned

A warning also goes out to the public indulging in drugs that police are taking a zero tolerance stance on anyone using or dealing in illegal substances. “Police members conducted observations and held operations where three people were charged for being in possession of drugs on Saturday, in and around the Berea patrol area,” Lt Naidoo said.

Beware of remote jammers

The quick thinking of an off-duty police officer led to the arrest of young man with a car jammer on Friday afternoon.

According to Captain Kevin Stephen, the off-duty policeman noticed the suspect peering into the vehicle parked on Windermere Road with a set of keys and remote and alerted Berea police.

“Together with the off-duty policeman, Berea members apprehended the suspect and found a remote jammer on the suspect. The arrest prevented a further crime as a cellphone and laptop were also in the vehicle when the man was arrested,” said Stephens.
