Clean-up on track in Dunkirk Road

Municipal departments have come on board to clean-up and maintain Dunkirk Road in Glenwood.

A meeting and site visit with ward councillor Nicole Graham and municipal officials is paying off for residents in Dunkirk Road, Glenwood.

Councillor Graham said a meeting was called with officials from the South Durban Basin, health department and parks department, to address issues such as the overgrown verges and the state of the park at the intersection of Dunkirk and Alan Paton (McDonald) Roads, as well as the state of the sub-station in Dunkirk Road.

“The issues were brought to my attention by a resident. Problems included thigh high grass growing on the verges and island in the middle of Dunkirk Road.

The grass had reportedly not been cut for a year, there was litter in the park and the area around the sub-station was covered in litter and filth. There was also a proglem with ground water in the park that needed to be looked at,”she said.

Graham said she had approached the team from Risk and Security to do something about the vagrants sleeping at the sub-station, as well as the issue of thieves stripping the cable inside the sub-station.

“The different departments have been tasked with following up and keeping on top of these issues. I have been promised by the departments that they will be making a concerted effort to ensure services are delivered and cleanliness is maintained in the road,” she said.

She said the next big project would be securing the sub-station. “Officials will also be looking at surrounding businesses to ensure they are complying with by-laws.”

Resident, Kathy Kruger, said the issues in the road had been ongoing for three years.

“I’m happy with the cleaning up. I just hope it’s done on a regular basis. I’m so thankful to Nicole Graham for getting a team together to oversee it as well,” she said.
