Fleeing motorist arrested after hitting pedestrian, smashing gate

"About eight to ten children were playing on the other side of the gate when the man crashed into it."

A RESIDENT in Ryde Avenue is calling for speed humps to be installed to slow down speeding motorists. The calls comes after a motorist smashed into the gates at a complex on Ryde Avenue on Sunday.

A shocked Vanessa Hudson, who lives in the complex, said the motorists tried to drive off but his vehicle was stuck in the gate.

“About eight to ten children were playing on the other side of the gate when the man crashed into it,”she said, adding the the car was badly damaged and the driver was bleeding.

A few minutes later the police drove past in Che Guevara (Moore) Road, and Hudson flagged them down.

“They were apparently looking for the man. He had allegedly knocked down a woman on Sydney Road by Durban Christian Centre.

“Both her legs were broken and she sustained a head injury. He also is believed to have smashed two other cars and was driving away from the scene,” she said.

The man was taken into custody by officers from SAPS Durban Central.

“This is the second time that Ryde Avenue has been used by speeding criminals. On another occasion a hijacked BMW was driven through here. What if the gate wasn’t as strong, he would have driven into all the children. We need speed humps in Ryde Avenue,” said Hudson.
