Man arrested for attempted rape in Umbilo

A man was arrested for attempting to rape a woman in Buxton Gardens Road, Umbilo.

AN armed response officer arrested a man who allegedly attempted to rape a woman in Umbilo on Friday.

Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said the man had allegedly robbed and attempted to sexually assault the woman in Buxton Gardens Road at 8.14am in the morning.

“Our officer obtained a description of the alleged attacker and patrolled the area in search of him before arresting him in Umbilo Road. He was handed over to the Umbilo SAPS officers who attended the scene,” he said.

Jackson said an armed response officer had also arrested an alleged bicycle thief in Rapson Road in Morningside at 7.29am on Sunday morning.

The alleged thief had jumped over the fence of a property and fled with a bicycle.

“Our officer took a description of the alleged thief from the resident and then patrolled the area in search of him.

“The alleged thief was arrested not far from the property and the stolen bicycle was recovered,” he said.

Umbilo SAPS took the suspect into custody.

Jackson added that a resident had arrested an alleged trespasser in Halford Road on the Berea at 6.48am on Sunday after he was spotted fence hopping.

“A Cowey Road resident arrested a second alleged trespasser who was handed over to the Berea SAPS,” he said.

Jackson commended the officers and residents for their swift action that resulted in the arrests.

“We believe that by working together with residents and the police we can send a strong message to criminals that crime will not be tolerated and that they will be brought to book in due course,” he said.
