“Mall” experience for homeless at Beachfront street store

The Pavilion Shopping Centre in collaboration with Rotary Durban hosted Durban's biggest Street Store, aimed offering a mall experience to the less forunate.

HUNDREDS of homeless and less privileged in and around Durban made their way to Durban’s beachfront for an exciting “mall” type of shopping experience on Thursday.

The Pavilion Shopping Centre recently hosted Durban’s Street Store, aimed to be the biggest in Durban. The Street Store in collaboration with Rotary Durban is a concept that originally started in Cape Town in January 2014 and is popularly known for being a rent-free, premises-free, free “pop-up clothing store”, found on the streets, curated by the public and has been adopted by many organisations around the world. The Pavilion recently hosted their “pop-up” store at the Bay of Plenty with over 10 000 items of clothing being donated for the less fortunate.

Michael Baretta, of Dot Good, which brought the marketing concept to The Pavilion said the “street store” concept is traditionally for the homeless but opened to under privileged, aged and those in need. “They get a mall experience and are allowed to shop around for eight items of clothing. We have our stylish staff and Rotary helping to create an upmarket shopping experience for the homeless,” he said.
