Alleged robber shot in Overport

Bystanders gathered in Overport after a robber who was allegedly shot after robbing a cellphone shop in Overport awaited medical assistance.

Bullets flew in Overport this afternoon when a man was shot after he allegedly robbed a local cellphone repair store.

A bystander in the crowd of onlookers who gathered at the corner of Juniper Road and Overport Drive as police waited for medical assistance to arrive, said he was completely shocked by the incident. “I just heard there was a shooting and came to see what happened. It’s really a very shocking thing to see.”

Another bystander, who also wished to remain anonymous said, “Crime is rife everywhere, I’m not surprised because you read about such things happening every time you pick up a newspaper.”

A group of students who witnessed the man being shot said they heard gunshots while in a lecture.

“We were in class and heard these gunshots. I think there must have been eight shots fired. We rushed to the window and saw the robber drop a bag and his gun at the corner before he fell,” said Yusuf Emmamally at the scene.

Witnesses on the scene said the armed robber allegedly went into the cellphone shop with three accomplices before demanding the staff put all their phones in a bag.

Berea police are investigating the robbery but said details of the shooting are still unclear. The injured suspect, as well as another suspect, were arrested but two others fled the scene.

Updates to follow.
