Salvation Army struggling to feed the hungry

The Salvation Army is appealing to the community to help with donations to help feed the hungry in Durban and in refugee camps.

THE Salvation Army is appealing to the community to help with donations to feed the hungry in the community.

According to Lynne Reilly, the Salvation Army has really been affected by the recent xenophobic attacks, and has been doing all it can to help feed and support the victims living in camps.

“We are trying to do a lot feeding schemes in the camps over the past few weeks. Money to fund our feeding efforts is limited and we are in desperate need of funds and donations, especially clothes and food,” she said.

Richard Chakwizira from the Salvation Army said the Lions Cub helped by providing food items for food parcels, but there was a huge need with the closure of the former ‘men’s home’ in Berea Road and the soup kitchen at the Berea Presbyterian Church.

“People are now coming to us all the time for food and clothes, it is a really desperate situation. Our community care team identifies families in the community who are struggling, and puts together food parcels for them,” said Richard.

Donations received by the Salvation Army are either given to the needy, or sold to supplement community projects the church runs.

“We are looking for donations of anything! We need furniture, and clothes and food especially,” she said.

Items such as soup powder, rice, mealie meal, sugar and tea, which can be put into food parcels are needed.

“We’ve also had school children who have wanted to help with our soup kitchens and we urge interested schools to contact us to organise this,” said Richard.
