Berea police have been hard at work bringing crime to a minimum over the past week.

New signage for Berea SAPS

Berea police received a bright new look with information boards and signage for the station sponsored by Enforce Security.

According to Berea SAPS communications officer, Lieutenant PN Naidoo, the information boards were a result of a partnership with Enforce Security. “We are grateful for their generosity and support,” he said.

Grant Smith, chairman of the Berea SCF Sector Two said he was glad the station had new signage that would brighten up the place and help the community get around the station easier. “It will make the station more user friendly,” he said, adding that last year the Community Service Centre had been painted and plans were being made to put in flower beds soon.

Enforce's Security, community projects manager, Nikki Mohlmann said, “We at Enforce want to build a closer relationship between the SAPS and our investigations team to fight crime together and support them with their needs. We are also looking at assisting in the station's Trauma Centre,” she said.

Alert police foil drug deal

Vigilant Berea police officers arrested a drug peddlar in Musgrave last Thursday.

According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, communications officer for Berea SAPS, the officers were patrolling along Povall Road when they noticed a suspicious man talking on his cellphone, while approaching a vehicle driven by another man.

“The police stopped and searched the man and found 29 plastic wrappings with white powder which looked like cocaine. The suspect was arrested for dealing in cocaine.

House-breakers tell all

Two suspects confessed to breaking into a Morningside property in the early hours of Friday. According to police, they were on patrol on Montpelier Road when they noticed two suspicious men walking along the road carrying two laptops. “The officers stopped and searched the suspects and questioned them about the laptops. The men confessed to stealing them and showed police that they broke into a premises in Montpelier Road,” he said.

The duo was charged for housebreaking and theft.

Public stop bag-snatcher

A women had her handbag returned with goods intact after having it snatched last Friday evening.

Lieutenant PN Naidoo said the woman was walking along the corner of Musgrave and King Dinuzulu (Berea) roads when a man grabbed her handbag and fled. “The woman screamed and members of the public gave chase and caught the suspect. Metro police attended the scene. The suspect was handed over to them and her handbag recovered.
