Xenophobic violence hits Dalton Hostel

It's been reported that several foreign nationals living at the hostel were kicked out.

Residents living in the Bulwer and Umbilo areas of Durban say they heard gunshots last night when what has been reported as  xenophobic violence erupted at the Dalton Road Hostel.

A post on the Bulwer Community Safety Forum’s Facebook page warned residents to stay away from “problematic areas” as xenophobic violence which has gripped  Durban communities, including Isipingo, Cator Manor and Umlazi, spread to the  hostel on Monday evening.

It’s been reported that several foreign nationals living at the hostel were kicked out.

Reports suggest police came under fire when they tried to disperse a crowd of men marching from the hostel using teargas and rubber bullets.

Police had used similar methods at an anti-xenophobia march in Durban last week which turned violent.

Meanwhile members of Parliament have reiterated calls for calm amidst the continued violence.

Currently temporary shelter has been set up in Isipingo, Chatsworth and Greenwood Park to accommodate the displaced foreign nationals and additional police have been deployed to beef up security in all affected areas.
