Electricity shutdown warning for CBD

Durban CBD and areas surrounding the Cathedral Road substation may be affected by a power outage as staff work on fixing pressure leak.

ETHEKWINI Municipality issued a release on Thursday afternoon informing residents living within the Durban CBD, and at areas surrounding the Cathedral Road substation, Beach Walk substation and Cato Street of an electricity shut down while technicians repair an oil leak.

On Tuesday, 7 April, a high voltage oil-filled cable between the Old Fort and Cato Street substations was damaged. In order to restore supply to the affected areas, electricity circuits were re-configured and the affected substation was energized using an alternate cable.

On Thursday morning a high voltage network monitoring system raised an alarm indicating that the alternate feeder cable had faulted and was losing oil pressure. Although the cable is functional it will fail if the pressure leak is not repaired. In order to identify and repair the leak that is causing the pressure loss and limit damages, the cable was taken out of service. It is unknown at this stage where the leak is, however repair teams are currently on site and attending to the problem.

The Municipality prioritises the repairing of the leak within the shortest possible time and apologises for any inconvenience caused.
