Driving selfie sparks outrage

SEVERAL alleged ‘driving selfies’ of a young Durban woman have sparked community outrage after they went viral on social media.

The photos of Nicci Redelinghuys were originally posted on Facebook, and have since been shared and condemned by various neighbourhood crime watch pages.

The caption to one of the photos shared by C-3 Community Crime Cooperative reads: “So yesterday I was driving on the N3 trying to take a selfie. Lol. I kept looking at the camera and forgetting to watch the road! But I guess I finally got it kind-of right! I still look scared as s***.”

Some Facebook users responded to the photos with extreme outrage, while others opted to mock the brazen motorist.

Taryn Gavin wrote: “And let’s find out who her insurance is and send them this… guaranteed her premiums will increase 10-fold.”

Candida Howarth wrote: “She also doesn’t seem to understand other rules of the road – she should be wearing a seatbelt… and she claims her dad is supposedly a three-times driving champ.”

Brendon Govender wrote: “This serves as proof of negligent driving, and you can get charged in court with these posts and pics… heavy fine and/or jail time.”

Quraisha Khan wrote: “No seatbelt  and selfie on the road – highly irresponsible. Next time take a selfie when you are parked at the mall in your car.”

Nadene Campbell wrote: “It concerns every single one of us – she will soon have an accident and kill someone… but why would she care!”

Debbie Clark Lamusse wrote: “Now I’ve seen it all… so irresponsible!”

Bronwyn Barnard wrote: “Until she kills a family driving down the N3 because of her carelessness… Let’s have a little concern for others’ lives too…”

Redelinghuys shot back at the criticism, saying: “Excuse me, this is my personal profile… If you disagree with the content I post on my profile then I think you should just take it and deal with it. I am my own person, I have rights… My life does not concern you, as you have no right to discriminate the way I act, speak and live! I will continue to drive how I want, take selfies when I want and talk how I want.”

Her profile has since been removed from Facebook.
