Fifteen arrested in joint operation

Blue Security and Metro Police arrested 15 burglars in Durban on Monday.

METRO Police and Blue Security arrested a gang of 15 burglars and recovered R150 000 worth of goods in a joint operation in Umgeni Road on Monday.

Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said a Metro police officer who had just arrested two alleged burglars and recovered goods stolen from a business in Umgeni Road had approached one of the company’s reaction officers for back-up assistance on Monday morning.

“The metro police officer told our officer that he was looking for 15 alleged accomplices and that a white bakkie had allegedly been involved in the burglary.

“The officer asked our security officer to watch the business premises while the police followed up on information they had received about where the rest of the stolen goods had been stashed,” he said.

Jackson said the police arrested a further seven suspects in Mansel Road and recovered stolen stock from a building.

In the meantime, a security officer spotted a white Hilux with several occupants that had slowed down next to the business premises in Umgeni Road, and as he approached the vehicle it sped off towards the CBD.

“Our officer immediately contacted the Metro police officer on his cellphone and informed him about the vehicle. It turned out that the Hilux had gone directly to Mansel Road where the police officers then searched the vehicle, found more stolen goods and arrested another four suspects,” he said.

Jackson said the driver of the Hilux also informed the police that he had just dropped off goods at an address in Russell Street.

“Police drove to the location where they recovered more stock and arrested another two suspects,” he said.

Jackson said the 15 suspects and stock were taken to the Durban Central Police Station, while the armed reaction officer traced the business owner and called him to attend the scene of the crime.
