No bail for student murder accused

The two men accused of killing Kurtlee Pillay were denied bail after a lengthy bail application last Friday.

The first bail application for two of the three men accused of the murder of student Kurtlee Pillay came to a satisfying conclusion for the family, friends and greater community.

After a lengthy bail application lasting four months, Blaine Raman and Dinesh Nana were both denied bail in the Durban Regional Court decision made by Magistrate Vanitha Armu.

Kurtlee’s mother Tracy Pillay said she was happy to conclude the first chapter in the case. “I am not happy, two youngsters will have to remain in prison and nothing can bring back my baby, but they do need to realise that every action has to have a consequence. They have to face the law,” she said in court.

Yesterday, 1 April would have been Kurtlee’s 21st birthday, many remembered and paid tribute to him with messages on Facebook.

Kurtlee Pillay was brutally killed in an alleged hijacking in Sherwood on Tuesday 4, November 2014. Suspects were arrested the following day in South Beach. Blaine Raman (20), Dinesh Raman (21) and Bilal Tayob (26) are charged with premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit murder, hijacking and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
