Decaying Berea houses put on notice

"The houses are becoming decayed, the properties are overgrown and there are even dagga plants growing out front."

TWO seemingly abandoned properties in Youngs Avenue, Berea, are cause for concern say residents in the vicinity.

According to a resident who asked not to be named, the properties at 38 and 42 Youngs Avenue, which were at one time used by students from Durban University of Technology, have stood vacant for a while and seem to be abandoned.

“The houses are becoming decayed, the properties are overgrown and there are even dagga plants growing out front. Rats have also become an issue. Something needs to be done,” he said.

According to the man, he had made enquired about the state of the properties and was told by municipal officials that they would assist by trying to locate the owner of the two properties.

Hoosen Moolla, from iTrump, told Berea Mail he had been informed about the deteriorating state of the two properties and had contacted the relevant building inspectors to find out what progress had been made in finding the owner.

City building inspector, Raymond Moodley, said he had visited the site and determined that both properties were owned by the same woman. “A notice will be served on the owner of the dilapidated buildings,” he said.
