Stakeholders meet over electricity crisis

eThekwini municipality and Eskom invited business to stand together and help find solutions to the power crisis in the country.

AN electricity load shedding round table discussion is underway today at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Roleplayers from eThekwini Municipality, Eskom, the KZN Growth Coalition and local big business gathered to address the vast implications of load shedding.

The meeting runs until 4pm today and will seek to identify the areas that require collaboration to minimise the impact of load shedding, discuss and understand the impact of load shedding in the municipal economy, explore the avenues to shield jobs, and create a communication platform between the City and all the stakeholders on matters of load shedding.

The round table discussion also aims to create a platform to solicit input into the national WAR Room, which was set up to address the crisis.

Of importance was synchronisation of the load shedding schedule to support the business activities in the city, plus to improve the advance warning of load shedding and communication around this.

The hope was to agree on the interventions to be implemented by both the municipality and all the stakeholders and to set in motion the Multilateral Continuity Forum to coordinate matters related to continuity of the city.

Speaking at the event, city manager, Sbu Sithole, said load shedding was devastating to the economy, however he urged everyone to turn this crisis into an opportunity, and something positive for the country.
