Man arrested in sports bar bombing

A Durban bouncer was killed at Buffalo's Sports and Action on Saturday.

DURBAN Central police are investigating the murder of a 46-year-old man who was the victim of an alleged petrol bomb attack on a pub in Durban.

According to Major Thulani Zwane, on Saturday, 14 March, a man allegedly threw an object, reported to be a petrol bomb, into Buffalo’s Sports and Action in Monty Naicker Road (Pine Street). The victim, who was a bouncer at the venue, caught alight and suffered serious injuries. He was rushed to hospital but later died of the injuries sustained.

Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson, said the gang of three armed robbers had gained entry onto the premises after hurling the bomb at around 9pm.

“When our officer responded he found the man had been set alight and called for the fire department and paramedics who arrived at the scene to transport the victim to hospital. The robbers had hurled the petrol bomb and then robbed the staff of cash before fleeing the scene on foot,” he said.

Jackson said the company had received intelligence of a suspicious white Mercedes that had been spotted in the area.
“Once our officer had called for emergency services he pursued the robbers to Pine Street and noticed three people jumping out of a white Mercedes. He proceeded to the car and approached the driver who was trying to flee but the car’s engine kept switching off,” he said.

Jackson said the driver was arrested and handed over to the Durban Central SAPS who attended the scene.
