Secure family graves with valid lease, warns councillor

Councillor Nicole Graham has assured residents graves of their loved ones would not be recycled as long as a lease was in place.

THE recycling of graves at Stellawood Cemetery has come under the spotlight again. Ward councillor, Nicole Graham has however assured residents that their family graves will remain secure provided they are in possession of a valid lease.

According to Graham, there is no policy per se on grave leasing, however the bylaws allow for the leasing of graves so that families may obtain permission to erect tombstones and to reserve the further use of the grave exclusively for family members.

The current tariff for the lease of a grave is R820 for a 10-year period. Families are allowed to re-lease the grave at the end of the 10-year term if they wish.
Graves that are not leased may be re-used by the municipality after ten years have lapsed since the last interment.

“Cemeteries are obviously a very sensitive issue and it is important that people have the right information and are aware of the policies. The prospect of ‘grave recycling’ is fairly grim but is unfortunately a necessity in light of the current space shortages that we experience in the city. Residents can be assured that if they do have a valid lease for the graves of their loved ones, those graves will remain secure,” said Graham.

She said she was, however, pleased to report that Stellawood Cemetery was in good condition and maintenance was being carried out regularly.
“The horror stories of the past where graves were hidden under long grass and debris no longer seem to be the case. The gates have also been replaced and security is thus improved. I visit the cemetery regularly to ensure that it remains a dignified and well-kept space,” she said.
