Durban student killed in collision

A fatal car crash in Durban claimed the life of a young student on Thursday night.

A DUT student was killed in a fatal accident in Morningside last night.

Jharod Pillay, 23-year-old electronic engineering student had been driving down Trematon Drive when his red Fiesta ST collided with a tree.

A family spokesman said the family got the devastating news just before leaving a  Sai devotee prayer service and rushed to the scene.

“He was at home and his parents went to service, they did not even know he had left the house so are in shock,” Jharod’s uncle said at the scene.

Scores of devotees, family and friends arrived at the scene in tears of disbelief.

Garrith Jamieson, operations director at Rescue Care said paramedics arrived to find the single vehicle had collided with a tree on the passenger side.

“The vehicle was extensively damaged. Paramedics assessed the driver and found that he had sustained fatal injuries and there as nothing further they could do to assist. He was declared deceased on the scene,” said Jamieson.

Jamieson was unsure what caused the fatal accident but Berea police will be investigating further.
