Possible parole change for Shaik

Questions are once again being raised over Schabir Shaik's medical parole after the convicted fraudster allegedly applied for normal parole this week.

CONVICTED Berea fraudster, Schabir Shaik, is once again at the centre of a media storm after it emerged on Monday that he applied to have his medical parole converted to ordinary parole.

If Shaik’s request is granted he will have more flexible parole terms.

Department of Correctional Services spokesman, Manelisi Wolela, confirmed that correspondence had been received from Shaik’s lawyers. He refused to give details of the content in an interview with SAfm on Monday.

In 2005 Shaik was convicted of fraud and corruption and was sentenced to 15 years in jail in 2006. After serving only two years and four months in prison he was released on medical parole in 2009. He was allegedly diagnosed with uncontrollable hypertension, for which he is receiving chronic medication.

Since his medical parole the controversial businessman has had two charges of assault laid against him, both occurring at the Papwa Sewgolam Golf Course in Reservoir Hills. In 2011 a young female journalist was allegedly throttled and slapped by Shaik, and in 2013 a caddie alleged Shaik assaulted him.

Shaik told the radio station he was surprised the matter had reached the ‘public domain’.
