Umbilo River toxic and unsafe

The public is advised not to use or drink water from the Umbilo River.

The eThekwini Municipality’s Communications Head, Tozi Mthethwa, released an urgent health notice to the public late on Wednesday urging residents not to use water from the Umbilo River.

According to Mthethwa, the toxicity analysis results from samples taken from the Umbilo River, close to where a chemical warehouse in Westmead, Pinetown caught alight this week, have indicated that the river water is toxic to marine organisms.

“As a pre-cautionary measure, people and their pets should not swim in, bathe in or drink any of this water. Officials from the municipality’s Pollution and Environment Branch, the National Departments of Water and Sanitation and Environmental Affairs will continue to monitor the situation,” Mthehwa added.
