Art deco society meets

Join Durban Art Deco Society as they visit the NMR headquarters, Durban's first air terminal.

DURBAN Art Deco Society (DADS) will visit the NMR Headquarters in Isaiah Ntshangase (Walter Gilbert) Road, Stamford Hill on Sunday morning, 15 February at 10.15am.

The public is invited to join the society as it visits the headquarters building, which was originally Durban’s first air terminal and dates back from 1936. This building started out as the original terminal of Durban’s first airport, and has been called a good example of the international art deco or art moderne style.

Squadron Leader Nigel Lewis-Walker will introduce the visitors to the background, history and artefacts of the site.

The visit will finish at the Officers’ Mess where tea/coffee and biscuits will be provided at R10 a head. Drinks can be bought in the Officers’ Mess at bar prices.

Cost is R35 for DADS members and R40 for visitors. Booking is essential. Contact Helen on 031 301 1951 or email helenore@mweb.co.za.
