MEC Mchunu shocked by theft of firearms and drugs

MEC Willies Mchunu is calling for a probe into a case of theft of guns and drugs from a police car in Durban.

KWAZULU-NATAL MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has expressed shock and dismay that several firearms and drugs went missing from a police vehicle in Durban.

According to reports, last week Tuesday at around 8.30pm, a detective parked a police vehicle loaded with firearms and drugs at the Snell Parade, Durban.

The next day, the car was apparently broken into and the firearms and drugs were stolen.

Police are investigating the matter and no arrests have been made. Mchunu has expressed shock at this incident, calling for a probe into this matter.

“We are shocked and disturbed that several firearms and drugs have gone unaccounted for. We are particularly concerned that these guns may join the pool of illegal firearms which are key drivers of heinous crimes and criminality in the province. We urge that something should be done immediately to have these guns and drugs recovered,” said Mchunu.

He also called on anyone with information on this matter to report it to the police immediately.
