Illegal dumping a major problem in the new year

Glenwood dumping gets out of hand with furniture lying at street corners.

WHILE most people living on the greater Berea have spring cleaned ahead of the New Year, residents are noticing a lot more dumping rearing its ugly head in various communities.

Glenwood resident, Illa Thompson said she sadly noticed more of a mess around the community especially with people dumping old furniture and appliances.

While Berea Mail visited the area last week, a computer monitor and two couches were found dumped, one on the corner of Somerset Avenue and Ferguson Road while the another on Bulwer Road had recently been removed.

Ward councillor, Nicole Graham, also a resident of Glenwood, also noticed the increase in rubbish. “I am unhappy with the state of our streets over the past two months and it seems they are getting worse!”

Graham has requested a meeting with DSW management to discuss more regular street sweeping for a number of problematic streets, including Helen Joseph, Che Guevara, Brand and Clark.

“I am also going to propose steps to try and increase the enforcement capacity of DSW. Currently, people dump illegally and litter with no consequence. It is important that the by-law is implemented and that offending individuals receive the full stipulated punishment,” she said.

Sherwood resident, Satish Dhupelia said the dumping is not unique to Glenwood and had also escalated in Sherwood where a couch was dumped in a bush with a “No Dumping” sign.
