Berea cop injured in Morningside shooting

A Berea policeman is recvovering well after he was shot at whilst wearing his bullet proof vest in Morningside this morning.

A Berea policeman was injured after a shootout with suspects in Morningside this morning.

According to Berea police communications officer, Lieutenant PN Naidoo, a woman who was jogging in Morningside flagged down the Berea patrol van at about 6.30 this morning (Wednesday, 14 January).

The jogger informed the officers of a suspicious motor vehicle parked on Havelock Road. The two officers went to check out the vehicle and noticed it stationary in Havelock Road. “They noticed two men dressed in blue overalls outside the vehicle, a Silver VW Polo with no plates. “The officers pulled up behind the car and as they got out the driver of the Polo rushed back to his vehicle, pulled a firearm and fired at the officers,” said Naidoo.

One round hit the state vehicle damaging the driver’s side door and window and the other round hit the officer’s bullet proof vest. “The officer who was hit,  fired back damaging the vehicle as it sped off.

Members gave chase and the vehicle was lost on Trematon Drive heading in the direction of Burman Bush and Umgeni Road.

Naidoo said the injured officer was recovering well.
