The art of upcycling

Joshua Serjeant is intent on using recycled items to make interesting pieces of art.

JOSHUA Serjeant is a talented artist who upcycles what others regard as rubbish, and turns it into a piece of art.

Passionate about the environment, animals and natural things, Joshua insists his family don’t throw away anything. For him, everything can be upcycled and turned into sculptural works of art. . His family are all passionate about the planet’s well-being and support recycling and the utilisation of items in Joshua’s innovative artworks.

Whatever the art theme or project may be, Joshua utilises found, recycled, discarded, obsolete and broken objects which he incorporates into his artwork in an appropriate manner, be it bottle caps, used nuts and screws, pieces of metal, wire mesh, electronic components and old studs or broken jewellery. He also keeps and uses toys, belts, fabrics, scraps of leather, rubber floor mat off-cuts and carpeting.

He is very ambitious and experimental in his ideas and use of materials and is always ready to face the challenges of new territory and to master different techniques in the creative process. He visualises the final artwork from the beginning and no matter what it takes to get there, he enjoys the journey, stays focused and determined to, in his words, “accomplish the mission”.

Joshua is also a pupil at the ‘green school’, Eden College, where saving the planet is a philosophy.
