Christmas party for Natal Settlers

Hepburn House at Natal Settlers Memorial Home were treated to a fun Christmas party when Father Christmas and his elves arrived to spread some festive joy on Saturday.

HEPBURN House had a festive surprise on Saturday when Father Christmas and his elves threw a Christmas party for the residents.

Hepburn House is home to severely challenged children, most of whom have cerebral palsy, as well as adult women who suffer from Alzheimer’s, Schizophrenia and other mental challenges. According to Hanneli Preston, of Aunty H Event Planner who organised the party, Father Christmas and his elves felt blessed to be at the home handing out presents to the ladies with items on their wish list and treats for the little ones.

Barbara Jackson, a 62 year old resident said having the party was “a wonderful surprise.” “I love my new slippers and all the presents,” she added.

“It was a fantastic party I really enjoyed it and enjoyed my sister’s company,” said resident, Yolande Fouche whose sister was one of the visiting elves.

“Elves” Jessica Cullen and Janet Eassson said being part of the party was quite emotional. “We are glad we were able to be here and contribute to their festive joy. All the residents crave is human touch and an ear to listen to them. To see their smiles and expressions was heart warming,” they said.

Preston said there were many donors who assisted in making the party special with financial and other donations. “I would like people to realise that the home has many needs for the new year and I hope that we can get sponsors to help with erecting an awning on the side of Hepburn House so the children can be taken outside for fresh air, stimulation and exercise without getting wet or sun burned,” appealed Preston.

Riona Balgobind, Children’s Ward social worker and ambassador of Hepburn House said, “As a social worker, making our residents feel joy and hope is so important. Making them know they are loved and wanted is the essence of what social work is all about. This is what we try to provide for our residents – a feeling of belonging which Father Christmas and all the elves provided.”

Sandra Welton, operations coordinator at Natal Settlers’ Memorial Home said, “We at NSMH are humbled by the overwhelming outpouring of generosity we’ve received from the public. Your continued support is much needed, not only during this festive period, but all year long. As you give with a generous heart, we will receive with a grateful heart. A tremendous thank you to all our donors and sponsors.”
