Be alert this festive season

Blue Security urge residents and business owners to be security conscious this holiday season.

THE festive season brings with it fresh opportunities for criminals to pounce on unsuspecting residents who are in 'holiday mode'.

According to Blue Security managing director Henk Van Bemmelen, there have already been several violent shootings as well as dozens of brazen housebreakings reported across Durban in recent weeks.

“We have advised our armed reaction officers to be on high alert following these incidents, especially as we head into the festive season where we don’t expect criminals to be taking a break. We have noticed a new trend where criminals are arriving in two vehicles to commit robberies and burglaries at business premises and we have seen from the shootings that when confronted and feeling threatened, criminals have been shown to be aggressive,” he said.

He said early mornings between 6am and 9am were prime times for these business incidents and residents should also be especially careful during these times and in the evening when arriving home from work.

“Keep your vehicle parallel to your property perimeter while you check the area around your property before turning into the driveway. In this position you will easily be able to drive off if you notice any suspicious activity such as a parked vehicle with occupants or individuals walking slowly near your home,” he said.

Van Bemmelen said criminals staked out potential victims and properties, and advised residents to report any suspicious activity to the police, their security company and neighbourhood watch group.

“We strongly advise residents and business owners to avoid carrying large sums of cash, especially at this time of the year when criminals are aware that staff bonuses may be paid and hope to find cash on the property. If you do need to use the bank, vary your route and the time of your trips,” he said.

Van Bemmelen advised home and business owners planning to shut down or go away for the holidays to ensure their alarm systems have been tested and are in good working order.

“Make sure that you cut the grass and remove any bush around your property that could serve as hiding places for burglars, cancel your newspaper subscription and ask your neighbour to collect your post if you plan to be away for several weeks,” he said.

Van Bemmelen said residents should create a ‘lived in’ look while they are away by installing outdoor lighting that works on a sensor. Use a cheap timer to turn on your lights inside while you are away or ask a neighbour to turn the lights on at night and return the favour when they need help.

He advised people to also be wary when travelling and visiting local holiday towns and beaches.

“It can be tempting to switch off your security conscious mindset when you are away from the city and on holiday and mistakenly believe that because you are not familiar with the crime trends of a specific area that you are safe. Rather be cautious and vigilant and don’t take any chances that you would not take at home,” he said.
