Blood supplies need a boost

Become a regular blood donor - you could save a life.

THE South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is on a drive to collect blood to meet the demand over the festive season.

SANBS aims to collect 3000 units of safe blood per day, to ensure it can meet the demand however, over the past two months, this target has been impossible to achieve and blood shortages have been reported across the country. Regular and prospective donors are urged to donate blood at their nearest clinic and help ensure stocks are available over what is traditionally a very busy period.

To become a blood donor you need to be between the ages of 16 and 65, weigh more than 50kg, be in good health, consider your blood safe for transfusion to a patient and lead a sexually safe lifestyle.
