Looming storm closes KZN beaches

The anticipation of strong winds have prompted the closure of several small beaches along the KZN coast during the weekend.

SEVERAL beaches along the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) coast will be closed over the weekend, due to the anticipation of strong winds.

THE KZN Sharks Board, along with the affected municipalities, have removed shark safety gear at some of the smaller, less popular bathing beaches today, to minimize damage and loss to the gear.

“The KZNSB’s operational management has been tracking the arrival of a fairly strong south westerly system that is due off the KZN coastline on Saturday morning, 15 November. This system is expected to produce a strong southerly groundswell in the region of 3metres by Sunday. Large swells may result in movement and damage to shark safety gear,” said Mike Anderson-Reade, head of operations.

All major beaches will, however remain, open throughout the weekend. According to Anderson-Reade, the board anticipated that the safety gear would be re-installed by Tuesday, 18 November.

The following beaches will be affected: Uvongo, Lucien (Margate north), Ski boat bay, Sysu (Kent bay), Trafalgar, Leisure bay, Port Edward, Umzumbe, Southport, Isipingo, Karridene, Umgababa, Alkanstrand , Blythedale , Willards Beach, Westbrook, Umdloti, Bronze Beach, and Country Club to Laguna Beach.
