Housebreakers arrested

Blue Security officers arrested four housebreakers in Durban over the past week.

FOUR alleged housebreakers and trespassers were arrested by Blue Security over the past week.

Blue Security operations manger Brian Jackson said the company’s officers had responded swiftly to burglaries in Gale Street, Lambert Road and Clark Road where they arrested the housebreakers as they attempted to hide or flee the scene.

“Our officer arrived at the scene of a business burglary in Clark Road at around 7.20am last Tuesday where he caught an intruder near an outbuilding that is used to store scrap metal on the property. He arrested the burglar and handed him over to the SAPS,” he said.

Jackson said an armed reaction officer had responded to alarm activation in Lambert Road at 3.30am on Saturday.

“A trespasser fled from the property when the alarm was activated but our officer arrived swiftly, chased him down and arrested him in Percy Osborn Road. He was then taken back to the property where he was positively identified and handed over to the Berea SAPS. It was unclear whether anything had been taken from the property,” he said.

Jackson said the third arrest was at a business premises in Gale Street at around 4am on Sunday. The officer arrived at the premises and on investigation found an intruder hiding behind a vehicle. He called him out of his hiding place and arrested him. The intruder was armed with a screwdriver.

“A compressor was later found on the boundary wall and handed back to the client. The suspect was handed over to the Umbilo SAPS,” he said.

A fourth housebreaker was arrested in a block of flats in Cato Street in the CBD.

“Our reaction officer was called to the building after two intruders were spotted jumping onto the second floor from an adjacent building and fleeing. Our officer noticed the door to a flat on the fourth floor was wide open and on investigation he found an intruder who was arrested and handed over to the SAPS,” he said.

Jackson said there had been several “gate-crashing” incidents over the past week in Helston Road in Manor Gardens, in Hayle Avenue in Morningside and in Davenport Road and Cato Road in Glenwood. The housebreakers fled with items ranging from televisions and a laptop to plastic chairs. The gang that broke into the Morningside property was seen fleeing in a silver grey Mercedes, while a silver VW Polo was involved in the Cato Road incident as well as a separate attempted hijacking last week.

Jackson said burglars had entered a business premises through the roof in Williams Road and fled with laptops and computers.

“We urge residents and business owners to install cost effective sensors on their driveway gates and in the roof as these provide an early warning system that could save both your life and protect your property against unnecessary losses,” he said.
